A historic development agreement signed by Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell will deliver a new A$1.2 billion master planned community in Melton, to be known as Atherstone.
The new master planned community, created under a joint venture between Lend Lease and Melton Shire Council will ultimately be home to around 14,000 people, over 4,500 homes, schools, civic and community facilities, neighbourhood shopping centre and 131 hectares of open space that will include recreation ovals, waterways, hike and bike trails, parks and gardens.
Planning permits will now be lodged for the 381 hectare development and construction is due to start towards the end of this year.
Head of Lend Lease’s Communities business, Ms Toni Milis, said the delivery of the new community will boost much needed housing supply, drive economic investment and job creation, provide new education facilities and ensure timely delivery community infrastructure.
“This will be a landmark community ensuring growth for the local region and providing much needed housing and economic activity.
“We have a shared vision to create an enduring sustainable community with a strong focus on quality housing and the timely delivery of community amenity.
“With the Development Agreement now signed, we will be continuing our local community engagement and are on track to lodge planning applications and target first sales towards the end of the year.”
Atherstone is located in Melton South, and is approximately 15 minutes from Lend Lease's Caroline Springs community and 35km west of Melbourne, in the Melton Growth Corridor. The Melton Growth Corridor is expected to deliver around 35,000 additional homes over the next 15 years. The project will operate under a land management agreement between Lend Lease and Melton Shire and is expected to be delivered over a 13 year period.
