Summer Fire Safety

Caroline Springs CFA is advising residents to be prepared for fire this summer. Whether you have a property that borders the grasslands or you simply travel through areas of grassland and/or bush. Make sure you know what to do if confronted by a wildfire.

Conditions on the ground are changing rapidly. September was windy and the driest on record while October has seen very little rainfall. As a result, the countryside is quickly drying out, presenting a very real fire risk.

During the Fire Danger Period (FDP), fires cannot be lit in the open air without a permit and any applications to burn needs to be made to the local Municipal Fire Prevention Officer. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and can bring a penalty of up to $5,500 or 12 months imprisonment.

Over the Christmas/New Year period it’s also important to understand the dangers associated with faulty wiring and fireworks.

With Christmas light and other electrical equipment ensure that power boards and point aren’t overloaded and don’t place extension leaders under carpet or furniture. A properly installed safety switch will instantly isolate the power if a sudden surge is detected.

Faulty wiring is dangerous and residents should make sure wires aren’t exposed and are always insulated. Repairs must be done by a registered electrician and do not attempt repairs your self.

In Victoria, the use of fireworks is illegal without an appropriate permit from the Victorian Workcover Authority and Fire Authority (during FDP).

In the hot summer months the threat of fire from the use of illegal fireworks is very high. Fire Officer Ken Walker said, “The use of illegal fireworks can result in large hard to control fires and can sometimes threaten resident’s lives and cause substantial damage to property.

During the FDP it’s essential that fires in the open air are reported urgently. If you see a wildfire or similar please call ‘000’ immediately – it may be your property you save by making that call.

The Caroline Springs Fire Brigade is on high alert all year with over 30 volunteers and 15 career firefighters who operate from both the Hillside and Caroline Springs Fire Stations. If you would like further information or a brochure please go to our website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or give us a call on 9360 5679 during normal business hours.

Look out for our great 2009 A3 Fire Safety Calendar. Available from December.
