Wanted: litter heroes for Clean-Up Australia Day sites

White Space

Melton Shire residents, community groups and schools are encouraged to volunteer to coordinate local sites for this year’s Clean Up Australia Day, taking place between 9.00am - midday on Sunday 4 March.

Local Clean-Up Australia Day coordinators identify clean-up sites in their local area such as parks or waterways. Council will provide coordinators with promotional leaflets for neighbourhood distribution, plus registration forms, collection bags and instructions.

Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin Mammarella, JP said that Council encouraged community-minded people to volunteer as leaders for this special event and help identify and coordinate local clean-up sites.

“Clean-Up Australia Day is a wonderful opportunity to get together with family and neighbours and spend a few hours making our municipality cleaner and, not to mention safer, for local birds and wildlife,” said Cr Mammarella.

“Melton Shire is home to some endangered wildlife, including the White-Bellied Sea Eagle, platypus and frogs, which are impacted by litter and waste. Days like Clean-Up Australia Day are critical in ensuring that our local flora and fauna is protected.

“As a community we have great fun on this morning and the volunteer site coordinators make a real difference.”

In 2011, the Shire hosted 16 Clean-Up Australia Day sites. Twenty five community groups were involved along with, nine schools, one church, five scout groups and four local businesses, making it a worthwhile, community focussed day.

Participants will be treated to a free barbeque at Hannah Watts Park after the clean-up.
