It's cool to walk to school
What is a Walking School Bus?
A Walking School Bus is a school bus that is powered not by an engine, but by legs. Its is a safe, healthy and convenient way for children to travel to and from school under the guidance of trained adult supervisors.
How does a Walking School Bus work?
A Walking School Bus is typically made up of two volunteers (a ‘driver’ and a ‘conductor’) and up to 16 children.
Each bus walks along a set route picking children up at designated ‘bus stops’ according to the ‘bus’ timetable. Participants are provided with timetables and a contact list so parents and volunteers can inform each other of changes and cancellations.
It is anticipated that we will start with one bus a week to and from school and then build up the program from there.
What are the benefits of the Walking School Bus?
The Walking School Bus Program has considerable benefits.
- Health benefits – Walking to and from school provides children with the opportunity to engage in regular physical activity and meet new friends.
- Environmental benefits - Every journey made on foot reduces traffic congestion around the school gates and reduces pollution outside and around the local area.
- Safety benefits — The bus provides children with a chance to develop and improve road safety and pedestrian skills.
Is the Walking School Bus safe?
Safety on the bus is of high importance with the route thoroughly checked for traffic hazards. Adults wear bright vests and children may wear bright sashes, to assist visibility.
Volunteer drivers and conductors undergo a Working With Children Check and complete an induction program that includes information on road safety as well as duty of care. All training is free.
How does my child become a part of the Walking School Bus?
To register your child’s interest in being part of the Walking School Bus, please contact your school or Melton Shire Council, or complete and submit the form at the bottom of this page.
We need volunteers
Of course we need volunteers who would be willing to lead the buses. Do you have a spare hour or two per week to help kids walk to school and get more exercise? We are not expecting you to lead a bus every day; we only need a minimum commitment of one walk per week.
If you are interested in becoming a driver or conductor, please contact Melton Shire Council, your Primary School, or complete and submit the form at the bottom of this page.
