This no 1. New York Times bestseller starts with the story of Dr. David Henry and his wife see the arrival of their twin children.  The son is born normally, whilst the second is born with Down Syndrome.  In an effort to spare his wife’s feelings, Dr. Henry decided to place her in an institution and tell his wife their daughter died in childbirth.  Unbeknownst to the doctor, the midwife does not take the child to the institution but keeps her to raise herself.  This story follows the little girls follows the way life takes unexpected turns and how a families ties help survive heartache and long-kept secrets.

Joe Cinque’s Consolation – Helen Garner

This is the true story of Canberra student Joe Cinque and his girlfriend, Anu Singh, who in 1997 planned to kill him after a dinner party.  Most of Joe’s friends had heard Anu’s plan to kill her boyfriend but didn’t believe she would go through with it.  Only after Joe was dead did they understand how serious she was.  The book is written by Helen Garner, who followed the trial of both Anu and her co-conspirator in Joe’s death.  This shocking story is about how and why Joe died and probes the gap between ethics, law and the helplessness of the courts in the face of what we think of as evil.

Note: Whilst the bookchat club recognises the literary merit of the content, we would not highly recommend it as we feel it has aspects that may be disturbing to some people.

My Sister’s Keeper – By Jodi Picoult

Nominated for numerous awards, “My sister’s keeper” explores the moral, practical and emotional complications of putting one human being in pain or in danger to save the life of another.  This novel is a brilliant read in the context of the characters who narrate and guide the reader through the story of Kate, who is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and her sister Anna who wants to be medically emancipated from her parents to stop them from making her give blood and bone marrow to keep her sister alive.  This novel (soon to be released as a movie staring Cameron Diaz) will take the reader on an ethical journey that keeps the reader riveted to the last page.
