GreenPass Plant of the Month

Plant of the Month - August 10

Hardenbergia violacea

Hardenbergia violacea or Happy Wanderer, is a native climbing plant that will bring welcome lasting colour to your garden throughout the winter months.

This evergreen climber is covered in masses of delicate pea-shaped flowers which come in white, purple, pink and mauve.

Happy Wanderers are a good choice of climber as their growth habit is less aggressive than other climbers, which means they are easy to maintain. They are also able to withstand the hot dry temperate conditions of South East Australia, and well as tolerating light frosts.

Happy Wanderers will grow in part shade to full sun and should be cut back hard in Spring after they have finished flowering.  Another light prune in Autumn will be beneficial to promote a flush of growth before winter. Feed in Spring with a native fertiliser.

Plant Happy Wanderer to trail along your pergola, fence line, walls or around your letter box. Varieties available at Plantmark include:

Hardenbergia violacea “Free ‘n’ Easy”: has burgundy coloured buds that open to long white sprays suffused with lavender pink.

Hardenbergia violacea: mauve – purple flowers

Hardenbergia violacea ‘Duo’: contains both white and purple flowers
